Artist Statement
As a multi-disciplinary artist, I experiment with techniques and materials across mediums. This allows me to explore different creative avenues such as painting (watercolor, oils, and acrylics), hand building ceramics, and mixed media.
I embellish my ceramics with underglazes which utilize my painting skills. Other techniques include sculpting, carving and sgraffito to add surface interest to my work.
I have painted numerous oversized fiberglass sculptures.
The latest is the Venus Flytrap for the Carolina Beach Centennial Celebration. Airlie Gardens in Wilmington has an Annual Sculpture Exhibit of oversized painted animals. I have participated in this event for the last six years. I also painted a pony in 2024 for the Southern Pines, Parade of Ponies.
Inspiration for “Feed Me”
My inspiration for “Feed Me” came to me after visiting the Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Garden in Wilmington. It’s a beautiful park featuring many carnivorous plants including Venus Flytraps, a variety of Pitcher Plants and Sundews native to this area.
I decided to cover my Flytrap sculpture with an assortment of these plants.
I used a palette of shades of blue and green which made the red of the flytraps pop. I painted many insects which unfortunately for them, are fatally attracted to these carnivorous plants!
