Venus flytrap on parade

Claire Nakamura

Artist Statement

In the cradle of the Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula), holds two adirondack chairs facing the colorful sunset as a school of fish wrap around the stem.

On the back side of the trap, fly a line of brown pelicans across the Carolina blue sky. These small, meaningful memories that locals and tourists both love and come back for time and time again.

Just as the Venus flytrap is an endemic species to the Carolinas, these beautiful scenes are only found here.

At the base of the sculpture, I added North Carolina's state symbols: the Scotch bonnet (NC state shell) and the megalodon tooth (NC state fossil).

I’m inspired by our oceans environment and the simple joys that it brings us! My whole life, I’ve spent beach combing, surfing, or listening to the waves. Always wanting to learn more about the life all around us.

I graduated from UNCW with my B.S. Biology where I studied coral reefs, shark behavior, and much more. On the side, I always practiced my art on the side.

For my future plans, I hope to tied together art and science to teach our future generations of young environmentalists!
