About Judith
As a mixed media artist who likes to work on a large scale, I am thrilled to have my idea for the Venus Flytrap on Parade accepted by the Island Arts Council.
The best part of the challenge is the subject matter! I have lived in a few countries where carnivorous plants are common, so my design includes those I have seen in their natural habitat. the venus flytrap, the monkey’s cup, the tulip pitcher, the cape sundew, dewy pine, and though i have never seen the cobra lily, i included it for its beauty.
I have used my artist’s license to create the monkey’s cup with a bit of exaggeration in size. I am happy with the outcome and hope you enjoy it.
My history with large outdoor sculpture began when I was invited to participate in the Beijing, China National Aquarium sculpture exhibition for two successive years. Both of these large works were award winners. My pieces were made of steel, sheet metal, and wire. Over 15 feet tall, weighing in the 100s of pounds, they remain in China. It was not feasible to bring them home. Other large-scale works include a life-size elephant painted with my iris design on permanent display in a Brussels hotel. This venus flytrap work is the first opportunity I have had to work on a larger scale, and i have loved it.
I am a visual art teacher with decades of experience and share that by teaching classes at the Cameron Art Museum, olli at UNCW, and in my studio.
